The Cry of River : Do You Care ? (Valknut)

Material Used: Used Vaccine Bottles, Non Chemical Pigment

The river has been an integral part of human existence. Most of human civilisation are developed around rivers and water bodies. It has always played an important role in influencing cultures and various practices. The historical ghats of rivers connect with daily life which has now turned into nothing more than a toxic stream. In today’s modern age, we have lost our connect with the river. Hence the degradation and a host of environmental issues.

In this work, Aarrti has used vaccine bottles to create the prehistoric Scandinavian and Germanic symbol of Valknut. This is symbol is said to represent the power of binding and unbinding. It is also believed to represent the connection between the 3 realms. Aarti uses this to symbolise the connection between Rivers, Humans and Existence and the co-dependency between the three.

The significance of red and black in this installation is to celebrate the diversity and energy of the river. The river in its tangible form and its intangible stories awaits intervention from like-minded individuals and society in order to show the beauty of coexistence.
