"ELEMENTS OF BEING"

An Exhibition of Installations and Artworks by Aarti Zaveri in 2016

Pollution to Purity
Outward to Inward
A Journey in Time: Eternal

Artists have been fascinated with Nature and its Elements from time immemorial and have found ways to communicate what they feel through different mediums to take their unique thought processes to people and have enabled them to see things in a different perspective. The changing times has made it pertinent for artists to find new ways to express their selves and comment on the situations that they deeply feel for. Creative processes too have undergone significant changes with New media and in which Installation art has had a major impact in raising consciousness on key subjects including Environment.

Aarti Zaveri in the first of a series of Exhibitions titled ‘Elements of Being’ supported by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India explores Nature and its Elements from different perspectives and creates artworks (Installations, Sculptures, Paintings, Photographs and Mixed Media) which reflect the deep churning process that she has journeyed on both externally and internally. These works are an external manifestation of the subjects that have been close to her philosophically and spiritually.

Elements: Earth, Water, Air, Fire and Aether from singular as well as collective form and of the fact that all creation including the human body is made up of these five essential elements and that upon physical death, it dissolves into these elements and thereby balancing the cycle of nature.

The mystic Poet Kabir sums it up beautifully in his Doha [Couplet]:

Transliteration:

Maati kehe kumhaar se, Tu kaaye raundhiye moye,
Ek din aisa aayega, Mein raundhongi toye

Translation:

The mud tells the potter, Everyday you grind me
To create something new, One day shall come, When you will be me

The Installations address the subject of Elements on different layers from the Physical, the Mental, the Emotional and the Spiritual and yet each one is related to the Being…of Being present in the now. There is independence as well as interdependence which brings one closer to a new understanding. Water and its flow has always inspired Aarrti by its limitlessness and ability to give and in these works come out prominently both in its tangible and intangible form. The River Ganges and its journey from the Himalayas to the Bay of Bengal has been a major presence and source of inspiration in this artistic endeavor. While the subjects represented seem devoid of human presence but the site in itself merges the moments of the public and private thought process. The use of different individual components remind one of associations latent in memory.

‘From the simple walk on the river bed tracing one’s footsteps.. to the lighting of a lamp…to the sway of the trees in the wind…and of looking up at the Stars in the sky in wonderment’.

The works invite the viewer to come and be part of the thought process that the artist wants to address and share without being judgmental and yet evoking a response within…Of looking at One’s own perspectives with regard to nature and its elements and of their Own being.

Be part of this reflective journey in being one with the Elements.

“You bring offerings of many kinds,
To seek blessings of all kinds,
What about Me…
My desire to freely flow,
To commune with my destiny.”
